How to Plan for Summer with Your HVAC Unit

Picture
Now is the time to start taking your HVAC unit’s needs into consideration now so it will work as expected when the year’s first heatwave hits.  Here are some tips from Comfort HVAC Jacksonville NC that will help you plan for summer with your HVAC unit in mind so you never have to worry about it not working when you need it most.

Clean the Area Around the Outdoor Unit

If you cover the outdoor portion of your home’s HVAC system with a winter cover, then head outside and remove it now so you don’t accidentally turn it on with the cover in place. While you’re outside, clean up the area around the outdoor unit, including any fallen branches, leaves, weeds, etc. You want to make sure there is at least two feet of open space along all sides of the AC unit so airflow isn’t restricted.

Change the Air Filter

Changing your HVAC system’s air filter is not only easy and affordable, but it’s the one thing that can help prolong its efficiency more than any other. Turn off your system and remove the old air filter. Write down its dimensions and head to your local home supply store to pick up an exact replacement. Install it with the air flow indicating arrow pointing in the right direction and close it up. Lastly, mark your calendar so you know when you should replace it again (i.e., in three months, or sooner if you have pets or high allergies). With a new filter installed, your system will operate smoother and more efficiently through summer.

Schedule an Inspection of Your HVAC System

Besides regularly changing the air filter, the most important thing you can do for your HVAC system is to have it inspected and serviced annually by an experienced HVAC technician. This is important because an HVAC tech may be able to identify minor issues and fix them before they turn into major headaches down the road. The technician will also optimize the system so it is heading into the summer primed for optimum cooling performance.

Have Your Ductwork Inspected and/or Cleaned

Over time, dust, dander, and other debris will build up inside your home’s ductwork. When this happens, it can result in more frequent allergy or asthma attacks and higher energy bills. To help ensure your system is working as efficiently as possible, you should have the HVAC technician inspect your ductwork and if necessary, clean them out. During the inspection, the tech will also be looking for signs of air leaks. If any are found, the tech will seal them and this can have an immediate impact on your HVAC system’s cooling power.
