HVAC Maintenance Tips
One of the best ways to make sure an HVAC system has a long life and delivers heating and cooling efficiently and safely is for the customer to perform some routine maintenance checks and troubleshooting on their own. This troubleshooting doesn’t require extensive knowledge of the system and is not expensive to perform. Indeed, in some cases, it costs nothing at all.
The Heating System
A heating unit that’s not giving off enough heat may just need to have the thermostat reset. Make sure that the thermostat is set at the right temperature. Another problem may be at the fuse box. Check the box to make sure the heating system is getting enough power, then simply press the heater’s reset button. If the heating unit squeals, rumbles, knocks or smokes, the homeowner may need to call our professionals to look at it.
A heating unit that cycles too often can have a clogged filter. All the customer needs to do here is replace the filter. A dirty filter may also be the cause of the unit not producing enough heat. If the heater runs on oil, the customer should check to see that the oil valves are open, and the unit has oil. This can be checked with a dip stick.
Some heaters self-lubricate, but if they don’t, the customer may want to oil the blowers then adjust them.
The Air Conditioning System
As with a heating unit, an air conditioner may perform sub-optimally because the filter is clogged. Replace the filter or clean it. Some filters are reusable and only need to be removed from the unit and hosed down or vacuumed.
Debris should be removed from around the condensing unit that’s part of a central air conditioning system. Shrubbery around the unit should be pruned back, and the drain should be checked to make sure that it’s carrying away condensation.
The condenser coil in a window unit should also be unobstructed, and its intake vents should be hosed out in the spring. Check the condensate drain to make sure that it’s not clogged and that it’s at a proper angle to allow moisture to run out.
